As a sort of crazy old uncle of modern sci-fi, though, van Vogt doesn't always get his due: his writing wasn't always spectacular, his plot and pacing fell somewhere between harum-scarum and willy-nilly, and his ideas were delivered in relentless salvos, each more outlandish than the last. But an embarrassment or not, the visionary van Vogt is indisputably part of the family, an entertaining and daring author whose influence can be seen in the work of countless other writers.

This 288-page paperback binds together two of van Vogt's better stories, "The Weapon Makers of Isher" and "The Weapons Shops of Isher," published in sequel-prequel order back in 1946 and 1951. John H. Falk is a leading figure in free-choice learning, museum research, and science education in the United States. Currently, he holds the position Sea Grant Professor of Free-Choice Learning at Oregon State University. He is the author of over one hundred scholarly articles and chapters in the areas of biology, psychology and education, co-author with Lynn Dierking of The Museum Experience, Learning from Museums: Visitor experiences and the making of meaning, and Lessons without Limit: How free-choice learning is transforming education, with Beverly Sheppard of Thriving in the Knowledge Age: New business models for museums and other cultural institutions and editor of numerous books including Free-Choice Science Education: How we learn science outside of school.

Lynn Dierking is Sea Grant Professor in Free-Choice Learning at Oregon State University, co-directing a comprehensive learning research program integrating K-12, Collegiate Teaching and Free-Choice Learning concentrations. Over a 30+ year professional career, Lynn has worked in a variety of educational settings: Middle and high school science classrooms, the Smithsonian Office of Educational Research, University of Maryland’s College of Education and as director of a middle school curriculum project, Science in American Life, at Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Her work centers on the long-term learning of children, youth and families, the development and evaluation of community-based efforts and efforts to involve historically under-represented communities in free-choice learning.

Alida Merlo is Professor of Criminology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Previously, she was a Professor of Criminal Justice at Westfield State University in Massachusetts. Her research is in the areas of juvenile justice, women and law, and criminal justice policy. She is the co-author (with Dean J. Champion and Peter J. Benekos) of The Juvenile Justice System: Delinquency, Processing, and the Law, 7th (Pearson), co-author (with Peter J. Benekos) of Crime Control, Politics & Policy, 2nd Anderson), co-editor (with Peter J. Benekos) of Controversies in Juvenile Justice and Delinquency, 2nd edition, (LexisNexis/ Anderson); and co-editor (with Joycelyn M. Pollock) of Women, Law & Social Control, edition (Allyn and Bacon). She is the past-president of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. In 2014, she received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Health and Human Services at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2012, she was presented with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Minority Mentor Award. In 2004, she received the Academy’s Fellow Award.

Peter Benekos is Professor of criminal justice and sociology at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania. He has conducted research in the areas of juvenile justice, corrections, and public policy. He is the co-author (with Dean Champion and Alida V. Merlo) of The Juvenile Justice System: Delinquency, Processing, and the Law, 7th (LexisNexis/Anderson), and co-editor (with Alida V. Merlo) of Controversies in Juvenile Justice and Delinquency, 2nd Outstanding Mentor Award presented by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Dr. Benekos is past president of the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences and was a trustee of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Dean John Champion, before his death from leukemia in 2009, was Professor of Criminal Justice at Texas A&M University in Laredo, Texas. Previously, he taught at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, California State University-Long Beach, and Minot State University. Dr. Champion authored and/or edited over sixteen textbooks, many of them in multiple editions.
